Are Gerbils Nocturnal Animals

Are gerbils nocturnal creatures?

If you have a gerbil then you may notice that they are not very active during the day time.  They seem to come alive after dusk when the sun has set and the night has drawn in.

This tends to happen between 6-8pm and they suddenly become very lively.

Then in the early morning at dusk they start to quieten down and retreat back to their nests to rest.

This is why it is not a good idea to put their cage near your bedroom as their activity will keep you awake.

Its useful to understand the definition of nocturnal.

Nocturnal means ‘active at night’ (opposed to diurnal)  soure: dictionary.com

So yes they are nocturnal animals. Their desire to be active during the night time means that they are categorized as such.

However, they are also very light sleepers.

This is due to the fact that they are prey animals and can wake in an instant to dart away from danger.

Is My Gerbil Overweight?

It is easy to think that a gerbil is overweight. They are veracious eaters and consume anything in their sight that they take their fancy to.

This is why it is important that they get the exercise that they need to as they need to work off the food that they eat.

Also, they need the food that they eat to give them energy to move around as much as they do.

So the question is ‘Is my gerbil overweight?’

The one way to find this out is to look at the average weight for a gerbil.

The average adult weight for male: 80-110 grams
·The average adult weight for female: 70-100 grams

If your gerbil is tame enough then you can try and weigh it and get a good idea of how it compares to the average adult weight.

What if my gerbil is overweight?

If your gerbil is overweight, there are some simple things you can do to remedy the situation.

Regulate what you feed your gerbil.

Stay away from fatty foods and mixes. Use plain oats and alfalfa pellets. Don’t feed them too much.

A cup of plain oats or alfalfa pellets once a week will suffice for them. Ensure they are eating the whole amount and not just seeds which are fatty.

Make sure they get plenty of opportunities to exercise.

If they don’t have a wheel to exercise on, then install one or get a cage or tank that is big enough to have a large one and for them to run around in.

You can also use a gerbil ball for them to run around in if you are so inclined

do gerbils bury their food

Do Gerbils Bury Their Food?

Gerbils love food.

As prey creatures they will look to forage for food as much as they can.

They don’t tend to discriminate what food they look for but will look to keep it safe once they find it.

So do gerbils bury their food when they find it?

Yes they do bury their food.

They do this because they want to prevent other creatures from getting to it.

They are very protective of their food, it is an instinct to do so for them.

Even if you use a food dish to put their food in, they will bury the food in the tank or cage.

Once they bury their food, there is a danger that they wont find it once it has hidden.

However, they have a keen sense of smell and very good foraging instincts which means that they will find it.

Even if their food is hidden under six inches of bedding, a gerbil will  be able to find it.

So how do you try and stop gerbils from burying their food?

Keeping track of their food can be tricky.

If you want to keep track on their food, start by measuring what they consume and make sure its in small and regular amounts.

You can keep track of it more easily if you so wish and you can even count out and count in the gerbil muesli/pellets if you so wish.

It may get tiresome to do so, bury if you want to keep track of their food, this is the best way.

can gerbils and mice interbreed

Can Gerbils and Mice Interbreed?

Gerbils are mice are similar creatures.

They both come from the rodent family, both species have a similar size and stature.

Both gerbils and mice have a pointed snout, small ears and 4 limbs.

They both have ravenous appetites and have a constant need to chew due to their teeth that are constantly growing.

In fact, if you weren’t familiar with the two species, you might say that they were almost identical in appearance.

So how do you tell the difference between a gerbil and a mouse?

Gerbils are larger creatures and have furred tails. They come from the desert.

Whereas, mice are more commonly found pretty much everywhere where there is food.

Both species are found in a variety of colors.

However, gerbils do not smell nearly as bad as mice do.

Gerbils also do not drink as much as mice and so do not urinate as often as mice do.

Male gerbils are much more inclined to get along with their own kin whereas male mice do not tend to get along.

So what would happen if gerbils and mice were put in the same place?

They are both very social creatures who enjoy living with other members of their own species.

If you have both species of rodent in your home then their cages can take up quite an amount of room in your home especially if you have more pets as well.

It can seem a tempting idea to put both types of rodents in the same cage so as to save space and time in cleaning their cages.

However, if both gerbils and mice were put in the same place, this would cause problems.

Its important to remember that even individual animals may be territorial or aggressive, when put with another species even if they are members of a species that is supposed to be social.

In this case, it is feasible to expect mice to be the more aggressive of the species rather than gerbils.

Another question that might arise if this situation were to occur is ‘can gerbils and mice interbreed?’

They maybe able to, however this would not be their first instinct. Their first instinct would be to fight each other and they would rather kill each other before any thought of breeding taking place.

So if you have any thoughts about seeing if this maybe possible, then for the sake of both species keep them apart as they will literally kill each other first.
