As you can see apples contain quite a lot of water content, a little phosphorus, they are a little acidic, but they do contain a lot of sugar.
This means that they can eat apple but only a little bit at a time on an occasional basis. The portion size should be one small chunk, just big enough so that they can hold in their paws. This is because of the sugar and water content it has.
Apple is not the best food you could give them and there are better foods available that you could feed them that they would enjoy.
Feed them raw apple, not apple which has been cooked, seasoned, flavored or has additives in it.
Gerbils cannot handle foods with a lot of water content as their bodies cannot process the water. If they have too much food with a lot of water content in it, they will get diarrhea and it will not be pleasant.
This is the same with food with a lot of sugar content, their bodies cannot process food that has a lot of in it and they will get sick if they have too much sugar.
